The San Marcos Runners Club (SMRC) is a group of local area runners of various
levels of ability and experience. Some of our members qualify for and run in
the Boston Marathon each year, while others enjoy running their miles at a 12-minute
pace. We enjoy going out for training runs at our respective paces and then getting
together to socialize. We also enjoy competing in races and, if we’re not
running, supporting our fellow members as they compete.
It’s part of our mission to promote running, fitness and healthy lifestyles
in San Marcos and Central Texas, and to provide information, encouragement and
training resources for people of all ages and abilities who are interested in
running or fitness in general.
The SMRC also accomplishes this mission by organizing and managing races for local charitable and service organizations in their fundraising efforts. We provide a great deal of labor and expertise to these groups, but we neither request nor receive any compensation for our services. In recent years, the SMRC has assisted with races to benefit the following local organizations:
Beta Sigma Phi - May Day 5K Scholarship Run
Bluebonnet Elementary PTA (Bastrop) - 5K Run for the Bluebonnets
CASA of Central Texas - “Speak Up for Kids” 5K
Kiwanis Club of San Marcos - Moe’s Better Half Marathon
Angel Drops - “Dash for Dawn” 5K
First United Methodist Church - Faith Run 5K
Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery - “From Here to Eternity” 5K
Navarro Education Foundation - Duckfest 5K Waddle & Run
Pet Prevent A Litter of Central Texas - Pet Fest 5K
San Marcos Professional Fire Fighters Association - Pink Heals 5K
San Marcos Bluebonnet Lions Club - Thankful Turkey 5K
We are also involved in one way or another - mostly by providing volunteers or specific services - in just about every race that occurs in the San Marcos area.
The SMRC - which has actually existed for many years - was reorganized in February, 2001, after being inactive for several years. The reorganization occurred primarily because of the efforts of Dr. Moe Johnson, who is a fixture in the San Marcos running community. Moe was a founding member of the original club, and felt that there was a large enough group of runners in the area to justify re-starting the club’s meetings and activities. So, after some organizational meetings, we decided to “take a run” at having a runners’ club in San Marcos again.
You can learn more about the club’s activities by checking out Current News. If you want information that you can’t find there, then please contact us!
