New leadership for the San Marcos Runners Club
The San Marcos Runners Club has been around for a number of years, and continues to grow and be more involved with community races and promoting fitness for the citizens of San Marcos.
The club has aided many organizations with fundraising endeavors by putting on 5K or 10K races here in San Marcos. Most of these races draw anywhere from 100 to 300 runners to visit our community and spend time and money while they run in our races. The good thing about local organizations sponsoring these races is that the money raised stays right here in San Marcos to help with various causes and benefits some very worthwhile needs that often go unnoticed.
Last Tuesday, the San Marcos Runners Club held their January meeting and elected new officers to direct and lead the club. It looks like the club will continue to play a significant role in providing service to the community and the runners in the area.
Elizabeth Wills was elected President for the coming year. Elizabeth is an accomplished marathon runner and travels throughout the state and out of state to represent the club and San Marcos at these races.
Laura Mason has always been active in the club and organizes many of the functions that the club does; and she was elected First Vice President. The Second Vice President is Elma Minor, and she is also a good worker who is often behind the scene getting things done. The Secretary/Treasurer remains Moe Johnson, who has promised to take notes at the club meetings this year.
There will be a nice revival of the Publicity Director role with Cindy Shannon-Lee taking over that duty. The Membership Director is Teresa Medina, and the Social Director is Jessica Diaz. At-large Board members who will be active in decisions of the club will be Britt Van Dine and Sheila Torres-Blank.
Past President David Alexander will give up the role of President, but will continue on as the club’s Webmaster and Race Director. David has been doing this for a number of years, and to replace him at either task would be difficult for anyone to take over. At almost every race in San Marcos, and even in nearby cities, David has been involved to lend his expertise to making sure the race goes over without a hitch or mistake. Only former race directors can appreciate the service he provides.
If you have not logged on to the San Marcos Runners Club web site you need to see a first class site. Club news, upcoming races in the area, race results of Runners Club members, links to other running web sites, past issues of this column and a forum for contact with members of the club are all there.
The latest addition is a video taken last year at the ARA-Moe’s Better Half Marathon that shows runners tackling the hills on the east side of the Tanger Outlet Center, as well as some of the scenery that runners see as they cover the course.
Some of the scenes show antique tractors, llamas, some cows wondering why all these people are out on a cold morning running past them and the effort of the runners trudging up the “big hill” runners talk about after the race: very entertaining, and hopefully a motivation for runners to give this race a try this year on March 7th.
All in all, the San Marcos Runners Club is in good hands, and will continue to serve the community and promote a fit and healthy lifestyle for the citizens of San Marcos. The club is always on the lookout for new members to welcome to all that the club has to offer. Walkers, joggers, runners and just anyone interested in an active lifestyle are welcome.
