Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon draws local runners

The first Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon to be held in Texas in San Antonio was a tremendous success in almost every way possible.

Over 25,000 runners entered either the full marathon or the half marathon. There were 7,604 finishers in the full marathon and 17,104 finishers in the half marathon, with a very brisk and chilly start over a flat course with lots of entertainment along the way.

San Marcos and area runners were represented very well, with 75 runners from here finishing the race.

The event was closed to entries in October; and the rumor is that, if you want to enter next year’s race, you may have to do it sometime in the summer to be assured of an entry. It will be another large crowd; and if you are late entering, you can use your training to run marathons in Dallas in December, Houston in January or Austin in February.

Alphabetical results for the full marathon from area runners and their times include:

Naomi Adams - 8:12:24; Phillip Adams - 3:27:09; Liesela Austin - 4:42:49; Karim Aziz - 4:37:57; Amanda Disel - 4:35:12; Daniel Driver - 3:58:44; Ty Ellisor - 5:23:35; Diana Esparza - 4:47:24; Daniel Garza - 8:12:24; Danny Gribbon - 4:04:31; David Hamilton - 3:18:02; Darryl Jiral - 5:27:18; Michael Locke - 6:16:39; Laura Mason - 5:43:04; Teresa Medina - 6:15:02; Elma Minor - 5:16:02; Anna Moczygemba - 7:59:10; Ronnie Moczygemba - 3:38:57: Juliene Phillips - 5:10:56; Eric Rindahl - 3:45:51; Eva Sanders - 5:08:45; Kayla Swanson - 5:18:17; Kathryn Welch - 4:31:42; Daniel Whitton - 4:36:46 and Elizabeth Wills - 4:00:12.

For the half marathon, a very large number of 50 runners entered and finished. These include the following and their times:

David Alexander -2:59:27; Sharon Bayliss - 2:13:19; Natalie Bell - 2:59:39; Krista Betzing - 1:54:25; Mark Brendalen - 1:44:38; Laura Blume -2:05:34; Isaac Brewer - 3:55:20; Augie Capelo - 2:17:36; Kaye Lynn Christianson - 2:26:36; Silvia Clark - 2:14:02; Michelle Craig - 2:54:59; Millie Cruz - 4:00:32; Alison Echlin - 4:34:56; Kathleen Eggemeyer - 2:45:14; Stacy Fowler - 3:20:49; Haley Galloway - 2:36:55; Marisa Garcia - 2:59:42; Elisa Garrett - 2:34:53; Austin Haas - 1:58:58; Rick Haas - 2:36:55; Bessie Hamilton - 2:14:15; Sarah Hamilton - 2:05:16; Marguerite Hauck - 2:15:13; Allison Healey - 2:22:36; Joan Hickey - 3:43:08; Teresa Irwin - 1:46:23; Kathi Jiral - 3:25:25; Kimberley Jordan -3:00:56; Denice Kardosz - 2:59:54; Natalie Kleinecke - 2:19:59; Haley Koop - 1:50:06; Kathryn Krzystyniak - 2:19:02; Annie Lozano - 1:56:01; Charlene Martinez - 2:31:20; Rachel McGrath - 2:32:09; Joe Medina - 2:17:42; Lisa Medina - 2:14:08; Nelda Pannell - 3:16:23; Kelly Parsons - 1:38:25; Laura Paul - 3:00:22; Clayton Phelps - 3:34:38; Pamela Rindahl - 3:08:21; Amanda Routh - 3:20:59; Taylor Ruff - 2:38:13; Lindsay Smith - 2:15:34; Theresa Sykes - 3:50:54; Tinker Murray - 1:53:19; Jerry Van Noy - 2:10:30; Suzanne Williams - 1:54:13; and John Wortham - 2:45:21.

A few interesting comparisons from local results is that 12 men and 18 women ran the full marathon. In the half marathon, there were 38 women finishing and only 12 men. The women outnumbered the men 3 to 1 in the half distance. I guess we know which of the two is the fittest sex when it comes to running marathons and half marathons.

C’mon guys, put on those running shoes and join in a great sport!

As you can see by some of the times in both races, you do not have to be the fastest runner in the race; just being a finisher is the goal in long-distance running. Fast times can come later after you finish your first marathon and run a second or third race.
