Runners get their “fix” at local race

While the Country Roads 10K was a race put on by the San Marcos Runners Club to raise some funds to help other organizations with their races, the Texas Fix ‘Em 5K was a good example of that.

Since another organization was the sponsor and provided some of the volunteers for the race, the Texas Fix ‘Em 5K allowed the members of the runners club to run. The fact that the distance was a 5K instead of a 10K might have been another factor in the nice turnout of San Marcos and area runners.

The overall champion was Mark Foster of San Marcos in 18:16, and the women’s overall champion was Amy Turner from Wall’s End in 22:32. You might have a hard time finding Wall’s End on a Texas map, as it is located in the United Kingdom.

Masters champions were Louis Kokermak in 19:11 from Austin and Angie Burke from San Marcos in 25:00.

Younger runners in the male 11-14 age group included Edward Suarez from San Marcos in first place in 21:34 and Gabriel Aparicio from Wimberley in second in 24:12. Ignacio Tanguma from San Marcos gathered in a second place in the male 15-19 age category in 22:24, and Wimberley’s Cody Colley had third in 22:41.

In the male 20-29 age group, Phillip Adams took first place with an 18:48 and third overall; Cole Parker got second in 20:56 and Geoff Seibel of Buda had third place in 22:13. Joe Garza ran a 24:53; Brandon Pendleton finished in 25:52 and Muff Hays from Kyle ran a 27:15. Austin Westfall from Kyle ran a 38:50 and Brent Ormand in Buda ran a 27:49.

The female 20-29 champion was Krista Betzing from San Marcos in 24:10. Other San Marcos runners included Valerie Colwick in 31:27; Shannon Jackson in 34:41; Stephanie Peters in 36:36 and Jennifer Van Note in 56:07. Kyle runners included Courtnie Chaffin running a 30:10; Alicia Westfall in 31:23 and Buda’s Martha Pena ran a 28:44 time.

In the male 30-39 age group Rodney Parra ran a 27:40; David Shannon ran in at 35:34 and Mark Gonzales ran in at 41:11. Ed Mendoza from Maxwell took second place in 20:05 and Daniel Garza from Martindale ran a 29:25.

For the women in that age group, Jessica Diaz gathered in a first place with a 26:39 and Liesela Austin took second in 28:17. Michelle Guardiola ran a 30:52; Andrea Boren ran in at 34:46 and Jennifer Nelson ran a 46:23. Patti Rankin from Wimberley ran a 33:24.

In the 40-49 age category, Stephen Erhorn from Wall’s End took first in 24:35; Dave Carlsberg of San Marcos ran a 28:16 and J. D. Welch ran a 30:45 time. The women runners in that age group included Diana Esparza in second place in 29:13 and Laura Mason in third with a 31:14 time. Georgie Gonzales took fourth in 41:11.

The male 50-59 age group had Robert Kantz taking first place in 28:09 and John Wortham in second in 33:10. Lee Bryant ran in at 40:04; Len Hickey finished in 41:49 and Canyon Lake’s Joseph Oberhauser ran a 52:59, just behind Gwendalyn Oberhauser in 52:57. He followed the rule of “ladies first.”

Other women in the 50-59 age group included Julia Symon in first place in 28:26 and Teresa Medina from Kyle in second in 29:16. Gina Moore ran in from her home in time to get a late start for the race, and still managed a 30:26 time. Elma Minor of Staples ran a 32:06 and San Marcos’ Jamie Armstrong ran a 36:33.

In the male 60-and-over group, Seguin’s Fred Frawley took first in 30:16 and Martindale’s Ronnie Murphey was in second in 33:45. Bonnie Minatra from Kingsbury took first for the women in 33:07 and Bonnie Pierson from San Marcos took second in 49:05.

With 82 runners on the San Marcos River Walk trail, it was a good turnout for the race; and the route is one of the most scenic a runner can enjoy along the river.

The next race for local and area runners is the Red Ribbon 5K out at the River Ridge course on October 18. This should have another good turnout from local runners.
