Beta Sigma 5K small, but deemed successful
The Beta Sigma Phi-nest 5K Scholarship Run was held last week; and while it was a smaller turnout then the past two races here in San Marcos, it was still a success.
Rory Tunningley from Lockhart was the overall winner in 15:32, and the female champion was Jordyn Platt at age 16 years in 23:23. Randall Wood won the male Masters title in 19:36 and was 3rd overall, while Bernadette Beck won the women’s Masters division in 24:18.
The male under-19 age group had Noah Tunningley from Lockhart taking first in 19:50; Richard Welch, age 9, from San Marcos in second; Keegan Taylor, age 14, in 3rd in 30:16, followed by Matthew
Brannagan, age 13, in 34:53 and Joey Galaviz in the same time. For the women under 19 years, Livi Massey from Lockhart finished first in 24:05 with Kelsey Daily from San Marcos, age 16, in 3rd in 26:14.
In the 20-29 age category, Tim Bayliss took first and second overall in 18:05, with his wife Sharon taking second in the women’s division in 27:56. First place went to Kathryn Futrell in 24:09. For the women’s 30-39 age group, Jessica Diaz gathered first in 26:59 with Andrea Boren of San Marcos in third with a 38:44 time.
The 40-49 age group had the largest number of entrants, with local coach Eloy Collazo taking first for the men in 21:24, followed by Ben Cortez in 23:01. Other area and local runners included Tommy Machado running a 23:57; Joe Medina had a 27:14; Joe Kenworthy in 30:35; Doug Brannagan ran a 36:28 and Dave Carlsberg was right behind him in 36:55. Kathryn Welch finished first for the women in 25:27, with Lisa Medina in second in 27:59 and Diana Esparza in third with a 31:19 time.
The 50-59 men had Abel Galaviz running a 25:48 and Dugan Taylor crossing the line in 28:06. The women in that age group had Elma Minor in first with a 34:08 and Donna Galaviz in second with a 45:57. Ronnie Murphey ran in the 60-69 age group with a 36:30 and my friend from San Antonio, Al Hale, took first in the over-70 age group with a 37:34.
Some of you may remember the article last week on the growing obesity problem with younger populations. The results seem to hold true in this race, as the under-19 age group had awards and entries going out to ages 9, 14, 13, and 12. The total number of both men and women in the under-19 age was ten. The total number of entries for 40-60 years was 23 entrants. The younger generation is lagging behind in fitness compared to the upper age groups.
I talked with Greg Pannell about his entry in the Disco Triathlon in Lake Ray Roberts, Texas. He had hoped to finish the 500-yard swim, 18-mile bike ride and 5K run in 2:15. He surpassed that with a 1:50 time. He said his practice in the pool for swimming was far different than swimming in a lake full of other swimmers and waves. He was pleased with that time, but is already thinking about where he can shave a few minutes off his time with a little more practice swimming and in the transition area.
The next race here in San Marcos is the Darnd’st Du duathlon on Sunday, August 10th out at the Tanger Outlet Center. The race starts at 7:00 a.m. with registration on the day of the race if you have not entered yet. This race is comprised of a 5K run, followed by a 30K bike ride in the hill country behind the Outlet Center and then another 5K run to finish. The organizers expect to have around 350 entries in this very popular race.
The beneficiary for the race is CASA of Central Texas; and if you decide not to run, there is always a need for volunteers. Contact Eloise Hudson at CASA at 512-392-3578. This is a fun race to volunteer for, either helping near the finish and transition area or making sure the bike riders follow the correct route. Watching some high-dollar bikes and very athletic entrants is well worth the time.
