Area runners abundant in Capitol 10K

Last week the Capitol 10K was held in Austin and San Marcos was well represented, with over 50 runners from here competing. Reports mentioned that about 15,000 runners participated in the run, but the results page only recorded 6,580 finishers.

I mentioned in the calendar a few weeks ago that the Susan G. Komen 5K run in San Antonio was a nice mid-sized race. Reading the Express-News, it was written that the race had 28,000 runners for that fundraising event. With numbers like these two races, it is very evident that running in Texas is far from over as a major fitness exercise.

For the Capitol 10K, several runners managed to finish very well in the race. David Fisher took first place in the male 16-19 age group with a time of 35:52, and Whitney Perkins also finished in first place in the female 20-24 age group with a time of 39:38. Doug Framke turned in a fast time for San Marcos runners of 36:57 for second place in the male 30-34 age group. Running for the San Marcos Runners Club and an active member of the club, Tim Bayliss ran a fast time of 36:54.

Other runners from here included Phillip Adams in 42:34; Chad Bubela in 1:02:22; Kristina Cowan in 1:18:13; Sarah Dressler in 1:00:05; Joshua Dunn in a good time of 46:11 and Richard Earl ran in at 59:02. Sharon Eads ran a 56:27; Crystal Flowers ran in at 51:17; Victoria Gandaria in 57:17, and James Garrett in 1:51:13, just behind Victoria Garrett in 1:28:51.

Alex Gonzalez ran in 1:03:17; Brittin Gough and William Grismer ran in at 1:11:48; Lauren Haba in 59:09; Scott Hill in 1:46:50; Kristen Hoffman in 1:12:26; Bill Huddleston in 1:06:40; Jesse Ibarra in 1:51:14 and Elisa Ibarra-Garrett in 1:28:52. Erika Icenhower finished in 1:42:16; Lisa Islas in 1:40:45; Scott Jecker in 52:22; Deidre Jepson ran a 57:13 and Gary Jepson ran in at 1:07:54.

Ted Juarez, Jr. ran a 1:19:50; Jessica Karr in 1:00:17; Ashley Kegley in 58:17; Joe Kenworthy and Miller Kenworthy came in at 1:14:52; Evan Kilpatrick in 53:35; Drew Lewis in 52:34 and Kyle Lusk ran a nice 46:21 time.

Ellena Machado ran a 1:27:28; Laura Mason ran in 1:11:24, just behind Isabel Mata in 1:11:08 and Teresa Medina in 1:06:36. Jennifer Nelson ran a 1:40:44; Kara Olson in 55:50; Michael Perez continues to set an example for his students in 46:47; Monica Ramirez finished in 1:07:28 and Martin Saldana in 1:05:46.

Abraham Santillan ran a 1:18:06; Jayme Shiner ran a 1:05:39; Eric Sterling in 1:00:04; Thomas Stott in 52:43; Brian Suiter ran a 46:40; Cassie Ward finished in 1:25:54 and Sean Whitehead ran a 58:16.

The next local area race coming up is the Chapa 5K run in Kyle on Saturday, April 12, starting at 9:00 a.m. Then on Sunday, April 13th the Texas State Sprint Triathlon is right here in San Marcos, with funds going to help the Triathlon Club at Texas State. They are still looking for volunteers for this race, if you are interested in helping and being part of a fun event if you have not watched a triathlon before. Both races will be close by and good runs for local and area athletes.

The San Marcos Runners Club has a meeting on Tuesday, April 8th at the San Marcos Activity Center starting at 6:00 p.m. This meeting is open to the public and you do not have to be a member of the club to participate in the meeting.

If you want to find out more about the club and its function, and talk with other runners and go over training programs, you are more than welcome to attend. Oftentimes the club meeting has a speaker present a program of interest to runners or walkers. The club is very active in the running community and always welcomes new members, but joining is not a requirement for attending the meeting.
