Local runners run well at Austin Marathon

There are some days when you just should have stayed in bed and watched the day go by. Last week, I listed the runners who ran the Austin Marathon.

I received an email from David Alexander who also lists the results on the San Marcos Runners Club web site. He mentioned that the times were off and that some of the runners listed didn’t run this year. I went back and noticed that the date was for this year, but the results under the date were for last year. So with that, this week we will list the results of this years AT&T Austin Marathon and Half Marathon from central area runners, as any runner who completes a marathon or half marathon deserves to be recognized.

From San Marcos runners in the marathon distance of 26.2 miles, we had a good turnout of local racers. Andrew Lock ran a fast 2:52 time, David Hamilton came across in 3:10:56 and Tim Bayliss had a 3:18:43. Ray Slater (3:28:08), Danny Gribbon (3:29:40), Joe Merchant (3:42:59) and Lori McNabb ran a 3:47:28 for the first woman from San Marcos. Olivia Burgess (3:53:08), Elizabeth Black-Wills (3:53:08), Kyle Shelton (3:56:48), Jeanie Mize (4:04:21), Briana Parramore (4:07:44), and Gina Moore (4:09:49) ran another marathon to add to her long list of marathons completed in all 50 states and other countries. Alex Fishman (4:22:11), Joshua Dunn (4:25:24), Sara Garcia-Torres (4:43:27), Hayley Simpson (4:48:49), Zach Carroll (4:54:26), Lane Cartwright (5:10:52), Tim DeJong (5:14), Deborah Bumgardner (5:36:36) and Laura Mason (6:08:16) rounded out the runners from San Marcos in the marathon.

Runners who completed the Austin Half Marathon of 13.1 miles from San Marcos included Kelly Parsons (1:32:47) and Magen Gray (1:35:02), who headed the runners across the finish line and made a statement for women running fast.

Trey Hutton (1:36:16), Ryan Hawkins (1:38:46), Bryan Schneider (1:40:25), Hannah Trammell (1:48:37), and Laura Haderxhanaj (1:50:40) were good finishers. Nathan Stinson ((1:55:55), Jennifer Hatch (1:56:30), Gabe Mize (2:00:10), and Erin Conley (2:03:05), Amanda Disel (2:03:36), and Christa Hamilton (2:03:47) all finished in a close group.

Blair Beal (2:09:37), Eva Sanders (2:10:51), Adam Goebel (2:13:35), Gina Meagher (2:14:29), Corrie Colvin (2:17:19), Allison Vaughn (2:17:45), Brittany Smith (2:22:42), and Paul Kloepping (2:22:56) also finished close together.

Jennifer Lozano (2:28:58), Deb Burley (2:29:19), Gina Goebel (2:35:31), Virginia Auerbach (2:36:08), Jill Jarvis (2:37:07), Naomi Adams (2:43:45), Colby Watts (2:46:24), Jaclyn Flores (3:11:45), Theresa Sykes (3:15) and Shannon Waits (3:38:54) rounded out the runners from San Marcos in the half-marathon distance.

Other area runners from the San Marcos Runners Club who ran the Austin Marathon included Paula Miller (4:17:29), Teresa Medina (6:01:13) and Daniel Garza, Jr. (3:55:41). In the half-marathon distance, members from the club included Elma Minor (2:30:35) and Charlene Martinez (2:42:43).

It seems that after running one long-distance race, it would be difficult to run another one a few weeks later; but the Better Half Marathon is next week on March 11 at the Tanger Outlet Center.

The one thing that might be good for these runners, and others who do not want to run a long run, is to enter the CASA “Speak Up for Kids” 5K that morning. Here is a chance to run either a long run or a shorter distance and watch the longer distance runners finish after you.

You still have a week to sign up for either race and enjoy running right here in San Marcos. I understand that Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Texas, the major sponsor for the 5K, will have their mascot around to entertain the younger kids — and maybe even some of the older runners. It should be a fun time for everyone.

The one thing that caused some concern is that Daylight Savings Time starts the same day, and everyone needs to “spring ahead one hour” Saturday night. We did not think that would be much of a problem, except that at 7 a.m. it is still dark outside at that time. Instead of starting at the listed time, we might have to wait until 7:30 a.m. for the half distance and 7:45 for the 5K run.

Of course, we will still have to set the course up and put out the aid stations along the route in the dark; but that is something we usually do anyway.

And if you do not want to run, we are always looking for volunteers who can get up early on a Sunday morning to cheer the local runners on and help them out. If you can volunteer to help with the race, give Tricia Schneider at CASA a call at 392-3578. Let’s have a good turnout next Sunday for a good race and a good cause.
